Warning, anyone playing a thief character..I'm sorry..maybe you're not one of the ones that annoy me, but this is getting to the point of being ridiculous.
I am 'stolen' from whenever I go into SMC. Usually by three or four different thieves. Is this god-modding? Because it sure feels like it when they steal from me. How do they know I had a pouch they could get to? How do they know my character wouldn't have grabbed their hand and cut it off?
Most of them emote 'you feel something slip loose of your belt as so and so cuts away your pouch of coins' or something. Today I got 'so and so steals some coins from your pockets'. Being annoyed as I am about being assaulted non-stop by these people every time I go to Silvermoon I emoted back that my pockets were empty. And I got a 'I hate you' whisper.
It's getting to the point I don't want to even go near Silvermoon City.
I wouldn't RP a guy that runs around beating people up for their lunch money randomly without permission. Would you? Why are these thieves different?
I suppose they think their approach is unique or interesting but I've been stolen from by ten different people in one hour in that city. I swear. It's getting old. Most of the time I just ignore them because the one time I tried to interact they just ran away laughing. Like I'm going to god-mod stealing from you but you can't react because I'm a super thief and I can't be caught.
I guess I have to start being creative about emoting back. "character smirks because that was a thief proof bag. Character laughs because the thief just stole a dummy bag full of lead." Stuff like that. Or I guess I can keep ignoring them, but it's getting really irritating.
>.<
I'm all for playing however you want, but I don't like people god-modding and that's what this feels like to me. Especially since most of my characters would be taking precautions against thieves anyway because they're all mercenaries and half are thieves themselves. /endrant

I don't go to SMC very often, and only got my bag stolen once. I was on Nana at that time, and whispered him that he just heard a young calf cry. The thief returned the bag.

Know how you feel... Seriously... If you are going to do something to another persons character, the action should always be an attempt... Its their character to decide if you are sucessful or not, not yours. Hopefully they won't god mod on their end....

I remember the story with Nana.... That was actually really sweet how you turned that around Tama.

I've had this happen to me in the past, Alliance-side, in Darnassus... it's always especially annoying when the thief in question is many levels lower than you and you see him even when he's "sneaking" up on you. And while it's never happened to me, I've heard stories of people seeing "/e steals x amount of gold from your purse," followed by a trade window being opened as the "successful" pickpocket waits for you to hand over the goods. Tacky much?
I hadn't realized that it was such an epidemic in Silvermoon City... although now that I know, I'm tempted to walk around there with some of my Horde characters and see if anyone tries it. I'd love to see the reaction to pickpocketing a bag that turns out to be full of my troll priestess's spell components (chiefly dead animal parts). Or give them a taste of the gruesome with my deader: "/e keeps her meager coinpurse tucked safely away in her lifeless chest cavity, fiercely guarded by her loyal flesh-eating pet c0ckroach. Go ahead and stick your arm in, if you like..."
As an addendum, I have seen some people RP pickpockets very well, without god-modding. If I happen to be on a particularly naive or unaware character who might not be on the lookout for thieves, I would definitely reward a well-RPed attempt with a few coin or some interesting object that my character happened to have on them at the time.

I don't mind if it's done well. But if I'm in cat-form or if it's god-modded, most of the time I won't respond. I gave some level 5 thief ten gold one time, because Rand was sleeping in the Park and not paying attention. That person RPed it very well, and I rolled with it.
I remember hearing about Nana's encounter. That was very cool, and a great take on it. So yeah, Fulbright, if it's done well I don't mind, but I feel much the same about god-modding.
Edited because I forgot... there's a grey item [pocket lint] that you could carry to hand out to the thieves. ;D
*bearhugs*

Corise, perhaps an example of what you feel is a "good" pickpocket would be in order? I'd like to see it for no other reason than to get other takes on it. On a side note, The Tauen and Draenei have a good out for some of this: A semi-prehensile tail that gives their personal space a bit more radius on the backside.

Ive had this happen several times on a few of my characters. Heh, I just use the, "Hey, he stole my *name of worthless item here* technique. In fact, once I caught who my character "suspected" to be the thief, and demanded he gave my Bat Bites back. This went on for about an hour, ending up with a knife at my throat. Later the bag was tossed back.
Yes, it is annoying, but eh, I find it fun to chase them down and annoy the hell outta them about returning various worthless items they stole. My characters, at least, know better than to carry anything on them that they cant afford to lose. Anyways, I'd rather be stolen from then have, say, "so and so appears from the shadows and stabs you in the side."... Any day.

Well, they state that "you feel something slip off your belt as the thief cuts it off" - they don't say the thief gets away. A higher chara could state that he immediately grabs for the bag and/or the thief's arm, or that (in case of a shammy) the energy shield hits the thief. If they are good RPers, they will react properly. Like the guy with Nana, who gave it back and explained to me OOCly that his chara would not steal from a kid.

Oh I remember the only time this happened to me and it was a good one in my opinion. I was playing Selynnberly, my NElf priest, at the time. She was walking through Stormwind looking for someone and not really paying attention. This person, around lvl 40 IIRC, followed me around for a while I assume waiting for the opportunity to strike. When it came up when I was looking at my mail at the Blue Recluse while waiting for a guild meeting to start. He did a good job roleplaying it and even made a few noises a couple times that had Sely looking around. The character she was looking for at the time was a druid who loved to be in cat form. T actually gave him some gold and said t hat was some nice roleplaying.

It was a child-aged thief. He told her that not all would be forgiving.

I had someone try this in Stormwind last night. They got away with Nau's bag of dead guppies that she uses as bait. Oroelus chased them down and got the guppies back though.
Poor Oro. ;D

Well..I suppose..but the fact that they say they cut the purse off instead of 'attempting' to gets me annoyed. And the one time I tried to react to the thief I got ignored.
I'm sure it can be done and done well, I'm just tired of the lazy or rude ones that want to have their fun however they want it and won't let other people respond in ways that make sense for their characters without whispering "I HATE YOU" when you do.
What's really irritating is when I log in ten alts in a row and each one of them gets stolen from while checking the mail box. >.>
